The 9/11 USAF Stand Down
Question: How was a plane which was known to be hostile able to have an unimpeded 48 minute joyride around US airspace before slamming into the heart of the US military?
Answer: Stand down.
"If a stand down order were given it probably would have to come from at least as high as the vice president."

9/11 Commission Testimony:
There was a young man who came in and said to the vice president "The plane is 50 miles out" [from Washington], "The plane is 30 miles out", and when it got down to "The plane is 10 miles out" the young man also said to the vice president "Do the orders still stand?", and the vice president turned and whipped his neck around and said "Of course the orders still stand, have you heard anything to the contrary?"

It is obvious the above orders did not involve defending Washington.
Bush also ordered a "stand-down" on 9/11 Investigations
Gerard Holmgren wrote:
"In spite of the magnitude of the attacks, and the fact that even the official story recognizes catastrophic failures of intelligence, while trying to gloss over the similarly catastrophic failures of standard airline security and air defence procedures, the White House has fought tooth and nail against any serious inquiry into Sept 11. Even the watered down inquiries which have taken place so far have been bitterly opposed by the White House and only conceded due to tremendous public pressure. They have been almost completely restricted to the issue of "intelligence failures" prior to the attacks, leaving the glaring issues of the air force stand down, and Bush's complicity and subsequent lies, as well as the insider trading unaddressed."

The Government didn't just "allow it to happen" - it planned, organized and carried out the attacks itself, compiled by Gerard Holmgren.
Update: On Native Soil: 9/11 Commission Report, to be aired in Court TV, Monday, August 21, 2006 from 9-10:30 PM that according to Jacqueline Cutler, from ZAP2IT is one of "Tonight's TV Best Bets" [and this is also the Feature Story from chron.com/tv , page 3, week from Aug 20-26]. Cutler wrote: "Why didn't the government protect us? Why didn't we know such an attack was possible? They asked President Bush to create a panel to study the events that led to that hideous Tuesday in September five years ago. When he did not, they protested and kept working the system until the 9/11 Commission was formed. From that body, we have the exhaustive book that details how, at every conceivable level, mistakes lead to the disaster that took nearly 3,000 lives... Unlike most, this one leaves the audience angry at not only the terrorists but at our government... "They had been told to stay in their offices" [declared Mary Fetchet, who lost her son Brad on 911]...
